Should I take a gap year between CC years?

09 Jun

I want to take a gap year sometime before I head off to a four-year university.

I’m currently enrolled in a community college as a freshman, and I’m wondering whether it would be more advisable to take the gap year between community college years or to wait until I have an AA degree before doing so.

I’m still not entirely sure what I want to do during that gap, other than that I want to travel and get volunteering experience.

Thanks in advance.

Where can I find voluntary work I don’t have to pay for the privilege as a qualified engineer?

09 Jun

I am a time served Multi-Skilled Electrical Maintenance Engineer with a HNC, I quit my job to study at a higher level and as a result have around 5 months off during the summer. I really want to get involved in some form of humanitarian work abroad and a cursory look around the internet seems I may have to pay a lot to work! It used to be the other way round! I don’t mind at all not being paid, but I do mind me paying to work, the idea seems a little insane especially as I have very little money!

Any advice on the type of work I could do that wont cost me the earth? I am not interested in working a till at a charity shop, I currently involved in a lot of self organised local ‘charity’ I want to put my trade to some use.

Charity work in third world country?

08 Jun

I’m a university student in Canada and am considering doing charity work or volunteering abroad in a developing country this summer. I have 4 months off (may- end of august) and really want to do something like this. I would like to focus on building schools or homes or teaching school children, basically anything helpful. Can anyone suggest a volunteer opportunity abroad? I’m open to different ideas and opportunities so please make suggestions freely. I’ve already done a bit of research and found Free the Children to be a good organization. Also, as I am a student I would really want a trip that would be less expensive. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Is taking a gap year sensible if I want to get into a good medical school?

08 Jun

I want to take a gap year before going to University because I really want to do some volunteering abroad. I have tried to find under 18 placements but they are very limited (in availability as well as the period of time spent over there) so I was considering taking a gap year to fit this in (so I will be old enough and have more time) but will this affect my chances of being accepted into a good medical school?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I just want to know the details on how to go about doing this kind of thing.
Does it cost a lot?
is it easy to find jobs if working abroad?
and what exactly is studying abroad? is it with a college/university that you go to.. or is this completely different?

Where in South America should I spent my gap year?

07 Jun

I will graduate high school this June and I plan on taking a gap year to volunteer and improve my Spanish speaking skills in South America. I’m looking for an area that has both a vibrant city, proximity to exquisite nature experiences, as well as to indigenous towns or villages. I’m looking for a region that is friendly and welcoming to foreigners and also has a “young” scene, since I’ll be eighteen. Plus I’d prefer that the area be CHEAP, since I’ll basically be broke for the next ten years of my life from college expenses..
I was thinking maybe Buenos Aires in Argentina or Quito Ecuador?

Thanks!

Volunteering Abroad – Best Organisations? Best Locations?

07 Jun

I’m a 17 year old student and have been inspired to do some voluntary work abroad. The college has agreed to give me and my friend time off college. We just need to sort out where were going and with which organization.

Ideally we want to work with orphans and other unprivileged children. It is also Essential for us to have a package which includes flights, visas and insurance.

If you could help us ie, talk about your own experiences or suggest the best organizations we would be most grateful.

Thank you very much!

Advice on a gap year for travel/volunteering before/during college?

06 Jun

I am looking forward to the process of entering college after high school graduation. However, my lifetime goals of helping others and seeing the world are very important as well.
Has anyone tried the “gap year”–where you take a year off to travel, volunteer, etc.–either before or during college?
Would you recommend a certain time, such as a gap year between high school and college, versus a gap year in the middle of college?
Was it worth it? Any good options? I like the sound of the Peace Corps, but would that be better for after college?
Most importantly–can I apply to colleges during high school (the normal time) but have my acceptances deferred a year??
